How do I design a belt in SOLIDWORKS?

SOLIDWORKS software lets you draw belts or chains based on pulleys, using the "Belt/Chain" function. These belts can control the position of a pulley responsible for adjusting tension.
Order startup
Straps are available from the "Assembly functions" menu in the assembly menu bar.

Pulley selection
In the "Belt/Chain" menu, select the elements to be linked. For each pulley, click the contact faces between the belt and the pulleys. You can modify the belt diameter to influence the reduction ratio, and the final belt length.

Adjusting the belt path in SOLIDWORKS
The arrows on the belt allow you to reverse the winding side. Simply click on the arrows to change the belt's trajectory.

Belt properties in SOLIDWORKS
If you tick the "pilot" option, the belt will shorten or lengthen to full length, and moving parts such as the idler will move. The "Use belt thickness" option lets you specify a thickness for the belt. The belt curve is offset from the cylindrical faces of the pulleys by half the specified belt thickness.

Creating a belt part in SOLIDWORKS
The "Create belt part" option will create a new part in the assembly containing the belt sketch.

Creation of the 3D belt model in SOLIDWORKS
Now all you have to do is perform a "Base/Extruded Boss" function to obtain a 3D belt.

In conclusion
Belts or chains can be produced with the "Belt/Chain" function in just a few minutes. Belt length and thickness are available as customized properties in the belt part.
